- Sunday, 12 August, 2018.
This means that the Friday before will be quite busy, with people traveling home to be with their families. Expect many devotional acts towards mothers in general and the Queen in particular throughout the weekend. Alcohol will not be served in many locations on Monday throughout Thailand, as a show of respect. Some Thai people will try and get Friday off to turn this into a longer four-day weekend in order to be with their family during this family and royal holiday.
The Queen’s Birthday
Her Majesty Queen Regent Sirikit สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ was born Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara on August 12, 1932. H.M. Queen Sirikit is the queen consort of Bhumibol Adulyadej, King (Rama IX) of Thailand.
In Thailand the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is observed as National Mother’s Day, just as the King’s Birthday is observed as National Father’s Day. The Queen’s birthday is observed in Bangkok and broadcast throughout Thailand. Around the country, Thai people pause to pay respect to their mothers by presenting them with flowers. Markets will be very busy in the morning seeking merit for their mothers through feeding monks.
