I will be travelling to Chiang Mai from 20 Apr 2013 – 23 Apr 2013 with two friends. We have booked out hotel for the first two night in Veranda Hotel and Spa and third night in town. Would like to look up for local tour guide. May you suggest?
Thank you.

This is a good question we get quite regularly, even from Thai people who do not live in Chiang Mai. Our recommendation is always the same. Best to work through your already-reserved hotel or guesthouse. Most guides are going to be more than adequate, and any additional excursion booking is usually through the same people who run the actual activities (trekking, elephants, etc.).
Just trust that you will likely get good recommendations and have a good experience. This is not like some other parts of Thailand where there are scams or a big difference in quality guides. Enjoy your stay in Chiang Mai.

Hello. If you visit during the rainy season (August), does it rain all day? Are there just downpours and it’s over or do you have to stay inside all day?

Some days it rains all day. Some days it doesn’t rain. Some days a bit of a downpour then it stops. Only a regional storm makes it rain all day. A lot of the time the rains (in Chiang Mai) are later in the afternoon, and then in the early morning hours. Really don’t worry about the rain in Chiang Mai. Yes we have it but it won’t ruin a vacation, and sometimes can be quite refreshing, cooling things down a bit.

Please see our article on Loy Krathong. The thing to do is arrive and then plan the events. We will translate the Thai schedule of events when they are available, however this is not too much in advance. Should follow previous years’ schedule (on our article).
